Tourist hot spots in Ernakulam
Fort Kochi
It is a town having a mix culture. The old buildings reminds the time of Portuguese and British. The Chinese fishing nets and the fresh Kerala fish curry are unforgetful experience to a traveler.
There is a small museum at the Cochin Bishop house depicting the foregone era. The Vasco da Gamma's tomb and the Portuguese cemetery are nearby. It is 10 km from city. Vypin island can be visited by boat from here. The high lighthouse (3 to 5 pm) and the scenic sunset from the beach is nice to watch.
Mattanchery
It is a popular tourist destination due to the historically important Jewish
Synagogue, Dutch palace with beautiful mural paintings and the interesting Jew street selling handicrafts and spices. It is near Fort Kochi.
Bolgatty palace
This Dutch palace (now a star hotel) was in an island, now connected by road.
Willington island
During the deepening of Cochin port, this island was formed. Southern Naval
command, Airport harbour rail terminus etc are located here.
Edappally St. George church
This ancient church has a beautiful wooden altar.
Tripunithura Hill palace museum
The Kochi's best museum located 10 km from the city. It has a good collection of Royal paraphernalia including gold and silver jewelery and other articles. The main attraction is the gold crown presented to raja of Kochi by Vasco da Gamma. The palanquin gallery, deer park, dinosaur etc are also worth visiting.
Munickal cave
Located near the Muruga temple at Chengamanad, 30 km from Kochi.
Kaladi
The birth place of saint Shankaracharya having a Sanskrit University, tower,
Adwaithashram etc. It is 8 km from Angamaly.
Aluva
Famous for the Shivrari festival celebrated on the banks of Periyar river.
Malayattur church
A major Christian pilgrim centre, 12 km from Kaladi. It is believed to be
vistied by St. Thomas, the Apostle of Jesus Christ. The fetival is on the next Sunday after Easter (March/April). It is a one hour climb from the base.
Bhoothathankettu dam
A nice place for trekking, 50 km fom Kochi.
Thattekkad bird Sanctuary
A heaven for bird watchers, 12 km from Kothamangalam. There is boating facility for tourists. Bhoothathankettu dam, Periyar valley and Edamalayar Hydel power station are near by.
Thrikkakara
Famous for the ancient Vamana temple, 12 km from Kochi. Main festival is Onam.
Kodanad Elephant karal
The elephant training centre is located in a scenic place near Perumbavur.
Cochin carnival
It is a popular tourist event from mid December to New year day celebrated at Fort Kochi.
The best amusement park located near Kakkanad, 14 km from Kochi. Rs 300 entry.
